World stocks mixed ahead of EU

Asian stocks surged Tuesday but shares in Europe hit a snag as hopes that the continent is ready to resolve its sovereign debt crisis once and for all began to fade.
Oil prices hovered below $85 a barrel while the dollar strengthened against the euro but slipped against the yen.
European shares fell in early trading, as jittery markets awaited a vote by Slovakia's government to approve the expansion of the European Union's bailout fund for strapped governments. Slovakia is the only country out of 17 nations using the euro that has yet to approve the measure.
Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.7 percent to 5,363.44. Germany's DAX lost 0.6 percent to 5,811.09 and France's CAC-40 slid 1 percent at 3,131.27.
Wall Street was also set to fall. Dow Jones industrial futures fell 0.4 percent to 11,325 and S&P futures dropped 0.5 percent to 1,185.10.
Asian shares ended the day higher, boosted by a pledge by European leaders over the weekend to protect the region's banks from the debt crisis — and by Beijing's move to buy shares of major Chinese lenders.
Japan's Nikkei rose 2 percent to close at 8,773.68. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shot up 2.4 percent to 18,141.59. South Korea's Kospi rose 1.6 percent to 1,795.02, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.6 percent to 4,227.60.
China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.2 percent to 2,348.52, a day after a government investment fund announced it had bought shares in major banks, helping to bolster the country's sagging stock market.
China's four biggest state banks soared after Central Huijin Investment Ltd., an arm of the sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp., said late Monday that it bought shares in the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China and China Construction Bank and that it would continue its market-support operations. It didn't say how many shares it had purchased.
The banks' Hong Kong-listed shares showed significant gains. ICBC climbed 6.7 percent, Agricultural Bank shot up 12.8 percent, Bank of China gained 7.7 percent and China Construction Bank added 5.8 percent.
Stocks markets on Monday were rejuvenated by signs that Europe was preparing serious steps to provide banks with the capital cushions necessary to withstand a possible debt default by Greece. Investors have been worried that European leaders weren't moving quickly enough.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Sunday that they would finalize a comprehensive response to the debt crisis by the end of the month.
But no details of the plan were released, and analysts cautioned against being too hopeful that a simple solution free of pain to financial institutions, investors or governments was imminent.
"Ultimately, we have to see something concrete from the European Union before we are more comfortable," said Derek Cheung, chief investment officer at Neutron INV Partners Ltd. in Hong Kong. Current market gains are simply "short-term excitement."
A default could cause the value of Greek bonds held by European banks to plunge, hurting their balance sheets. U.S. banks would also be affected if Greece goes through a messy default, since they own Greek bonds and also have close ties to European banks.
In Tokyo, a pause in the yen's appreciation against the euro helped export shares, Kyodo news agency reported, citing stock traders. Honda Motor Corp. jumped 5.5 percent while electronics giants Sony Corp. and Sharp Corp. rose 5.7 percent and 4.5 percent respectively.
Among the most active shares on South Korea's Kospi were Dongyang Steel Pipe Co., up 2.8 percent; and Samyang Optics, up 7.5 percent. Steel giant POSCO rose 2.9 percent.
The gains in Asia followed a strong rally on Wall Street on Monday.
The Dow Jones industrial average soared 330 points, or 3 percent, its biggest one-day gain since Aug. 11. The Dow closed at 11,433.18 — the highest since Sept. 16. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.4 percent to 1,194.89, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 3.4 percent to 2,566.05.
Benchmark crude for November delivery was down 54 cents at $84.86 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $2.43 to settle at $85.41 in New York on Monday.
Brent crude was down $1.30 at $105.35 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.
In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3621 from $1.3650 late Monday in New York. The dollar fell slightly to 76.67 from 76.69 yen.

RASCALS dominat

As we had predicted and expected, the Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn and Kangna Ranaut starrer, RASCALS, has embarked upon the best ever 'Dussehra' opening day. As per early estimates the film has netted anything from 7-8 crores on Thursday.
The other two releases of the week, LOVE BREAKUPS ZINDAGI and SOUNDTRACK (which released on the usual Friday), have decent to dull starts to show for their effort.
Meanwhile Vipul Shah's FORCE, which released last week, has netted around 23-24 crores during the opening week, the best ever for a solo John Abraham starrer.
While on the older releases, Pankaj Kapur's Shahid-Sonam starrer, MAUSAM, has crashed badly in the second week and will find it difficult, if not impossible, to be a coverage fare, even if we take the non theatrical rights into account.

Midcaps:Broader markets

Indian stock market indices are trading in the green after opening the trade on a weak note. Stocks from the consumer durables and capital goods space are leading the pack of gainers. However, PSU and Power stocks are the top losers.
The BSE-Sensex is trading up by 11 points and NSE-Nifty is trading up by 4 points. BSE Mid Cap and BSE Small Cap indices are trading higher by 0.6% and 0.3% respectively. The rupee is trading at 49.12 to the US dollar.
Pharma stocks are trading firm led by Ranbaxy Labs and Orchid Chemicals. According to a leading financial daily, Wockhardt has informed the Bombay high court that it would clear all its dues to the bondholders amounting to Rs 3.58 bn. This amount is inclusive of interest and installments. The pharma company is expected to submit a detailed repayment plan to the court soon. It may be recollected that a Singapore based hedge fund QVT Financial LP along with an overseas unit of Sun Pharma had filed a petition against Wockhardt for nonpayment of the due amount. Earlier this month, the high court had asked Wockhardt to give a timeline regarding repaying the Foreign Currency Convertible Bonds (FCCB) bondholders.
Aluminium stocks are trading in the red. Hindalco is the biggest loser while Nalco is the biggest gainer. According to a leading financial daily, state run National Aluminium Company (Nalco) is planning to diversify into nuclear power generation. The company will invest Rs 114.4 bn jointly with Nuclear Power Corporation of India in the project. The company has already identified Kakarapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) project for development. The recommendation for the investment is under consideration by the government. Nalco is also planning to set up a smelter and power project in Indonesia due to availability of good quality coal at economic prices. Two coal mining firms have been identified for long term arrangement for sourcing coal for the planned project.

MFs as equity markets bleed

Being enveloped with downbeat global economic news, Indian equity markets have corrected by good -12.8% in the present quarter (i.e. from July 1, 2011 to September 22, 2011) and 22.1% since the last high 21,004.96 – made on the November 5, 2011 (the Muhurat Trading Day). The backdrop of following global economic events has literally sends shivers down the spine of several investors – both in Developed Markets (DMs) as well as Emerging Markets (EMs).
Debt overhang situation in the Euro zone
Downgrade of Greece’s sovereign rating from “Caa1” to “Ca” by Moody’s
Downgrade of Italy’s sovereign rating from "A+/A-1+" to "A/A-1".
Downgrade of U.S. sovereign rating from ‘AAA’ to ‘AA+’ with a negative outlook [due to increase in debt-ceiling limit to U.S $16.4 trillion, in midst of dismal economic growth rate (last quarter i.e. April 2011 to June 2011, GDP growth rate was mere 1.00%) and rising unemployment rate (9.1% in August 2011)].
Accentuating inflationary pressures in the Emerging Market Economies (EMEs), including India
But rather than pressing the panic button and following the herd mentality; if we look at India specific economic dynamics, realisation would dawn that the GDP growth rate offered by India is far more appealing than in DMs.
Health of India’s economy
(Source: CSO, PersonalFN Research)
Yes, we have contracted to 7.7% in Q1FY2011-12 as RBI’s has maintained its anti-inflationary stance (of increasing policy rates) to tame inflation. But, the stance followed by RBI are indeed needed when most EMs are facing the brunt of rising in commodity prices. Corporate Advance tax numbers even though they have dwindled to 9.9% in Q2 FY2011-12 as against 19.0% in Q1FY2011-12 (due to brunt of rising interest rates), the long-term corporate earnings for companies with good management look fairly sustainable – especially if we consider the strong consumption theme and well-regulated banking and financial services sector. Moreover, going forward if FDI is encouraged (by building suitable infrastructure), it would further provide thrust to India’s economic progress. We believe that an economic growth rate of over 6.0%-6.5% (on an average) is good to attract foreign flows.
As far as the depreciation in the Indian rupee is concerned, it would be a short-term phenomenon given low confidence. The U.S. Dollar would depreciate going forward given the economic problems heaping there along with near to zero interest rate regime prevailing there.
What should investors do?
Hence taking a holistic view of the aforementioned global and domestic economic factors we encourage you investors to participate in the Indian equity markets, and avail of the present reasonable valuations. However, since we may see the aforementioned global economic headwinds unfolding, staggering your investments would be an appropriate approach. We recommend that you invest in diversified equity funds as this will help reduce risk (however one needs to stay away from U.S. or Euro oriented offshore funds in such a scenario). You may get defensive and invest in value style funds (as fund managers may percieve good value buying in these corrrective phases on the equity markets) and also large cap funds. It would be prudent to opt for the SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) mode of investing as this will help you to manage the volatility of the equity markets well (through rupee-cost averaging) and also provide your investments with the power of compounding.
Remember, while investing select only those equity funds which follow strong investment processes and systems, and invest with a long-term horizon of at least 5 years.
Safeguarding aganst, the downbeat economic factors gold is likely to be bolder going forward. As long as worries of soverign debt crisis prevail, gold would continue its north-bound journey. Moreover, the precious yellow metal would act as an hedge against rising cost of living as well. At Personal FN, we recommend that you should have a minimum of 5%-10% allocation to gold. Invest in gold with a long term perspective with a time horizon of 10 to 20 years.

Cloak Can Hide Objects

A new kind of cloaking material that can render objects invisible in the terahertz range has been developed at Northwestern University.
Though this design can't translate into an invisibility cloak for the visible spectrum, it could have implications in diagnostics, security, and communication.
The cloak, designed by Cheng Sun, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, uses micro fabricated gradient-index materials to manipulate the reflection and refraction of light.
In order to manipulate light in the terahertz frequency, which lies between infrared and microwaves, Sun and his group developed metamaterials: materials that are designed at the atomic level.
Sun's tiny, prism-shaped cloaking structure, less than 10 millimetres long, was created using a technique called electronic transfer microstereolithography, where researchers use a data projector to project an image on a liquid polymer, then use light to transform the liquid layer into a thin solid layer.
Sun said the purpose of the cloak is not to hide items but to get a better understanding of how to design materials that can manipulate light propagation.
"This demonstrates that we have the freedom to design materials that can change the refraction index. By doing this we can manipulate light propagation much more effectively," he added.

Challenge Of T-Mobile Deal

AT&T Inc and T-Mobile USA fought back against the Justice Department's challenge to their proposed merger, arguing the deal would "usher in more intense competition."
AT&T and T-Mobile, owned by Deutsche Telekom AG, argued in a federal court filing on Friday that the massive $39 billion deal would free up spectrum and create new capacity for Americans whose mobile devices are transmitting increasingly large amounts of data.
"The Justice Department's complaint fails to come to grips with the significant efficiencies this transaction will generate," the companies said in their filing.
In the brief, AT&T asked the court to allow its purchase of T-Mobile to go forward and to require the Justice Department to pay its costs in the challenge.
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit aimed at stopping the deal last week, saying the acquisition of T-Mobile USA, the No. 4 carrier, by AT&T, the No. 2, would harm competition in the wireless market and lead to higher prices.
The department, in particular, seemed determined to preserve T-Mobile as an innovative, discount carrier that held down wireless prices.
Responding to that concern, AT&T said "T-Mobile is not a unique or material competitive constraint on AT&T."
"T-Mobile has not been a meaningful or unique innovator in terms of network development and deployment, nor is it likely to become one in the foreseeable future," AT&T said in the filing with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
The deal partners took issue with the Justice Department's review of the effect of the merger on a national basis instead of on a local basis. They argued that more than 90 percent of U.S. consumers currently have at least five wireless carriers to choose from in their local markets.
They also disputed the method the Justice Department used to analyze the deal, saying it was too simplistic.
If the merger goes through, AT&T will unseat Verizon Wireless as the No. 1 U.S. mobile carrier. Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.
"We continue to believe this transaction as currently proposed is anti-competitive and harmful to consumers," Justice Department Spokesperson Gina Talamona said. "We will respond further in our court filing."
The lawsuit is the biggest antitrust challenge yet by the Obama administration.

Dismissed IAF officer: Anjali Hangs Herself

More than six years after former Indian Air Force (IAF) officer Anjali Gupta became the first woman to be court-martialled, she committed suicide at a family friend's residence in Bhopal. She was found hanging on Sunday, India Today reported
According to police, Anjali was alone in the house of IAF Group Captain Amit Gupta when she allegedly took the extreme step. She had been working with a private company since her dismissal from the IAF.
The police said Anjali had arrived in Bhopal on September 7 from Bangalore, where she was employed. Group Captain Amit told the police that he had gone to Delhi for the engagement of his son on September 8. Though he asked Anjali to come along, the latter insisted on staying at his house.
In 2008, Anjali had claimed that her Commanding Officer, the Second-in-Command and the adjutant, had been sexually harassing her. When protested, she was threatened to be sent away on temporary duty and later was put under house arrest. Her mother and brother were allegedly thrown out of the Kalka military station.
Acting on a complaint by Anjali, the General Court Martial (GCM) assembled at Udhampur (J&K) in August 2010, directed to forfeit six-year service of the accused Colonel for the purpose of promotion and also sentenced severe reprimand.
According to the complaint, Col Anurodh Mishra of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (EME) battalion allegedly called Anjali at his residence on the pretext of office-related instructions and misbehaved with her.
The police team also found a 15 litre can and two bottles filled with petrol, at the spot where Anjali was found hanging. Amit pleaded ignorance about the fuel. Police now also suspect that she might have contemplated setting herself on fire before she decided upon hanging.

Groupon Cuts Marketing Costs

Groupon Inc's second-quarter loss more than doubled as it hired more than 1,000 new employees, even though the Internet daily deals company trimmed back its marketing costs.
Revenue rose to $878 million in the second quarter compared with $644.7 million in the first quarter, and rose more than 900 percent from $87.3 million in the second quarter of 2010, the company said in the S-1 filing, an update of its original filing for its initial public offering.
The numbers show that Groupon's growth slowed from the first quarter. Revenue was up 36 percent in the second quarter, below growth of 63 percent in the first quarter.
The second-quarter net loss attributable to Groupon was $102.7 million, in line with the first quarter and more than double the $36.8 million loss from the second quarter of 2010.
In June, Groupon filed to raise $750 million in an IPO. The move revealed a company growing quickly, but losing money. Some analysts have questioned a business model vulnerable to competition from companies like Google Inc, and which relies on a huge, costly sales staff to enlist merchants and handle customer service.
Some analysts worry that the company will keep having to spend large amounts of money to attract and retain customers.
Marketing costs fell to $170.5 million in the second quarter, according to the filing. Groupon spent $208 million on marketing during the first quarter, up from $4 million in the same period a year earlier.
That spending is bringing more users to the site. Subscribers jumped to 115.7 million from 83.1 million at the end of the first quarter, the company said in its filing, confirming a Reuters report last week.
But Groupon said about 40 percent of its subscribers in North America came through word of mouth, a new disclosure. That suggests Groupon did not have to spend as much on marketing to attract subscribers.
ACCOUNTING FOR MARKETING EXPENSES
Selling, general and administrative expenses rose to $273 million in the second quarter from $178.9 million in the first. That was driven by hiring: Groupon hired more than 1,000 employees in the period, lifting its sales force to more than 4,800 people.
Caving in to investor pressure, Groupon also dropped references to a financial metric it touted as a good indicator of its performance.
Concern about marketing costs led some to question Groupon's use of "adjusted consolidated segment operating income", or ACSOI, which excludes online marketing expenses, stock-based compensation and acquisition-related items.
In the first quarter of 2011, Groupon reported a $117 million operating loss, but ACSOI was almost $82 million. That's partly because some $180 million of online marketing spending had been stripped out.
The company in its latest filing used a measure that includes marketing expenses, but not stock-based compensation or acquisition costs. On this basis, Groupon lost $62.3 million in the second quarter, an improvement from the first quarter when it lost $98.3 million.
Cumulative customers, or Groupon subscribers who have purchased deals, topped 23 million, up from 15.8 million as of March 31. The company sold 32.5 million deals as of June 30, up from 28.1 million at the end of the first quarter.
Average revenue per subscriber was $9, down from $10 in the previous quarter and $13 a year earlier. But the company sold an average of four Groupons per customer, up from 3.8 in the first quarter and three a year earlier.
The company generated an average of $27 in revenue from each Groupon it sold. That compares to $23 in the first quarter and $21 a year earlier.
Despite reports that some merchants are unhappy with their Groupon experiences, many still seem to be lining up to offer deals, according to the updated IPO filing.
Groupon featured 78,466 merchants as of June 30, up from 56,781 three months earlier. The merchant backlog, or the number of merchants waiting to run a deal with Groupon, topped 49,000 at the end of the second quarter, up almost 20 percent from March 31.

op 10 tips for starting a business that will succeed

Start your business while you're still employed. How long can most people live without money? Not long. And it may be a long time before your new business actually makes any profits. Being employed while you're starting your business means money in your pocket while you're going through the business start up process.
Don't do it alone. You need a support system while you're starting a business (and afterwards). A family member or friend that you can bounce ideas off and who will listen sympathetically to the latest business start up crisis is invaluable.
Get clients or customers first. Don't wait until you've officially started your business to line these up, because your business can't survive without them. Do the networking. Make the contacts. Sell or even give away your products or services. You can't start marketing too soon.
Write a business plan. The main reason for doing a business plan first is that it can help you avoid sinking your time and money into starting a business that will not succeed.
Do the research. You'll do a lot of research working through a business plan, but that's just the start. You need to become an expert on your industry, products and services, if you're not already. Joining related industry or professional associations before you start your business is a great idea.
Get professional help. On the other hand, just because you run a small business, doesn't mean you have to be an expert on everything. If you're not an accountant or bookkeeper, hire one (or both). If you need to write up a contract, and you're not a lawyer, hire one. You will waste more time and possibly money in the long run trying to do things yourself that you're not qualified to do.
Get the money lined up. Save up if you have to. Approach potential investors and lenders. Figure out your financial fall-back plan. Don't expect to start a business and then walk into a bank and get money. Traditional lenders don't like new ideas and don't like businesses without proven track records.
Be professional from the beginning. Everything about you and the way you do business needs to let people know that you are a professional running a serious business. That means getting all the accoutrements such as professional business cards, a business phone and a business email address, and treating people in a professional, courteous manner.

Work Experience For Good Job

Build Work Experience

You must also work on developing adequate work experience. This will be a kick start to surviving in the increasing cut-throat competition, when you are really on the look out in the industry searching for your first ever full-time job.
Internships, Summer Trainings and Volunteering Opportunities
Another good way to develop quality work experience is to look out for internships or summer trainings or even opportunities for volunteering in varied projects and events. If these trainings are paid, good for you, but even if they are not, they add tonnes about you to your resume.
If you aspire to be a journalist or a writer, you could opt as a volunteer for your resident campus magazine, newspaper or even your college's or department's journal or newsletter.
If you aim to be a social worker, you could be a regular visitor to old age homes, poverty stricken areas and homeless shelters. Similarly, if you aspire to get into stocks as a broker, you could look for summer training or an internship at a firm dealing in stocks and securities.
Working for somebody is not the only channel these days to make some money. You might be a champ in a particular subject, say computer dynamics. So you could just gather some students who require assistance with the subject and tutor them. Similarly, if you are fond of children, you could approach professors or other personnel in your college and offer to baby-sit their children.

Strauss-Kahn Of Police Line Up

The maid who has accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, of sexually assaulting her in his luxury hotel room picked the Frenchman out of a lineup.
Strauss-Kahn was picked out of a police line up by the chambermaid last night, according to media reports.
Strauss-Kahn, a likely candidate for 2012 presidential race in France, has been charged with attempted rape, sexual assault and unlawful imprisonment.
The IMF cheif has denied the charges against him.
"Strauss-Kahn will plead not guilty," William W Taylor III, his lawyer, said in a statement.
Strauss-Kahn allegedly sexually assaulted the 32-year-old maid, who happened to be in his USD 3,000 a night suite at the Hotel Sofitel in Times Square on Saturday afternoon, thinking it was empty.
The IMF chief allegedly emerged naked from the bathroom, chased her around the suite to the bedroom and "engaged in a criminal sexual act".
He also allegedly tried to lock her in the bathroom.
Before the incident, it was being widely speculated that Strauss-Kahn, a Socialist politician, had a chance at beating incumbent President Nicholas Sarkozy, who is plagued with all time low ratings.
Observers and rivals have said that the alleged charges will ruin Strauss-Kahn''s chances at a political career.

PENTAGON IS SPEAKING UP

Unlike many other agencies, the Pentagon has not been afraid to complain to lawmakers about the effects of the standoff. With a budget that reflects roughly 3 percent of the U.S. economy, the effects are already being felt.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in January that the lack of a budget was causing a "crisis on my doorstep" that could result in less time at sea for the Navy, fewer fighter jets in the air and delays in maintaining equipment.
"Frankly, that's how you hollow out a military even in wartime," he said.
Within a static budget, the Pentagon has had to find an additional $8 billion for pay raises, increased fuel costs and increased medical costs by diverting money that was earmarked for supplies and weapons programs, other Defense officials have told Congress.

Among the activities affected by the continuing resolution:

- The Navy has delayed construction on a Virginia-class submarine, a destroyer and an aircraft carrier.
- The Army has delayed purchasing more Chinook helicopters and postponed refurbishment of war-torn Humvees.
- The Army has stopped work on its Stryker mobile gun system.
- The Army lacks money to upgrade its Apache Longbow helicopters, but is forced to keep buying new Humvees that it does not want.
- A Pentagon freeze on civilian hiring has threatened the department's plans to step up oversight of its contracting.
- The Air Force had planned to purchase 48 MQ-9 Reaper drones for use in Afghanistan, but can't buy more than 24.

The Pentagon has already had to delay 75 projects, which could lead to higher costs when they resume.
"There's no question that we will spend more money for the same goods if we don't receive the money in a timely way," Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn told the Senate Appropriations Committee on March 1.
The construction delays from Navy-related projects alone could cost the U.S. 10,000 jobs, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus told the Senate Armed Services Committee on March 8. It could take three years for the Navy's plans to get back on track, he said.
Top defense companies have warned that budget-related disruptions could drive up costs.
In Maine, General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works shipyard had expected to be well along the planning process by now for a new DDG-51 destroyer for the Navy. Though construction wouldn't begin for several years, the shipyard needs to begin figuring out which dry dock to reserve and which of its 5,600 workers to assign to a project that can take up to five years from order to delivery.
That planning process has become even more complex now that the project is in budgetary limbo, said shipyard spokesman Jim DeMartini. Another chunk of anticipated work overseeing maintenance and modernization efforts at other shipyards around the country has also been put on hold, he said.
"The more uncertain we are downstream about what kind of work we're going to have, the more difficult it becomes for us to put together a logical plan and execute to that plan," DeMartini said.

Worst Weekly Set Asia Stocks

Asian stocks fell more than a percent and were on course for their biggest weekly loss in nine months as investors shunned risk on concerns about the pace of policy tightening in the region and growing tensions in Egypt .
A broad sell-off in Asia since the start of 2011 on inflationary worries has shown no signs of abating, as expectations of more monetary tightening have encouraged investors to shift funds from emerging to developed markets.
Analysts said the selling in emerging markets could have some more room to run, especially in countries where stocks are ripe for a pullback after last year's stellar gains and the near term interest rate outlook is unclear.
On Friday, Taiwan shares ended down more than two percent, stock markets in Thailand and Korea were down one percent, while Australia's benchmark index snapped a seven-day winning streak a investors took profits from banking and resource shares.
MSCI's index of Asia Pacific shares-ex-Japan is set to fall by more than 4 percent this week, its worst performance since May 2010.
So far this year, Asian shares have underperformed the MSCI world index by five points as traders cut positions due to a steady drip of strong data out of the U.S.
"Pressure on emerging market equities may well, therefore, continue while uncertainties about the intensity, duration and effect of the ongoing tightening cycle remain alive," Barclays strategists said in a weekly note.
This week alone, China raised interest rates, Philippines held rates but raised its inflation forecast and Bank of Korea surprised markets by holding rates steady, although it is widely expected to tighten again in March.
Foreign selling has picked up in Asian shares, especially in South Korea this week while offshore selling in Taiwan on Thursday was the biggest in six months.
Indonesian shares fell 0.6 percent with shares in PT Garuda Indonesia, the nation's state-owned carrier, tanking by more than 20 percent on debut.
Japanese markets were closed for a national holiday.

METALS GAIN

Copper rose back above $10,000 per tonne, while tin prices hit a record high as strong U.S. jobless data reassured investors about the pace of the recovery in the world's biggest economy.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's plans to relinquish powers but not step down did little to boost investor hopes of a quick solution to the Egyptian crisis and lifted oil prices.
Gold, was steady at around $1,364 an ounce and U.S. crude oil futures rose 88 cents to $87.61 a barrel.
In the currency markets, the dollar edged higher after notching up solid gains against the euro overnight and after traders said the European Central Bank stepped in to rescue a failing Portuguese bond auction.
Broad trading patterns in the euro are in line with wave formations and the single currency may be in the initial stages of what may be a decline towards the lower end of a broad 1.3250-1.3850 range.
"Any easy gains in the euro are susceptible to rapid reversal," said David Watt, senior currency strategist at RBC Dominion Securities.
The Australian dollar extended losses after the central bank said interest rates were likely to be on hold for some time.

India To Develop New Aerospace Products For Security Needs

India is set to develop new aerospace technologies and products to meet its growing security needs, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said Monday.

'We have chalked out an ambitious roadmap to develop many challenging aerospace programmes to meet the needs of our armed forces,' Antony said, inaugurating a three-day international seminar on aerospace technologies here.

Exhorting the state-run defence units to improve quality and pace of interactions with the armed forces, Antony said the need of the hour was to enhance the percentage of indigenous systems for meeting their requirements and security concerns.

Among the aerospace programmes to be developed are the advanced medium combat aircraft (MCA), aerostat, unmanned combat aircraft (UCA), airborne early warning and control system (AEW&CS), medium altitude long-range unmanned aircraft Rustom and gas turbine engine Kaveri.

'Though the roadmap provides immense opportunities for the defence research and development establishments and the private industry, greater indigenisation and self-reliance are essential as no country, however friendly, will part with its critical technologies for strategic reasons,' Antony told about 800 delegations.

Lauding the defence and aerospace industry for its contribution to the successful development of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Akash missile system, Nishant unmanned aircraft, pilotless target aircraft Lakshya and airborne early warning systems (AEWS), the minister said cooperation at local, national and global levels was imperative to keep pace with the developments in the field globally.

'Though Tejas has often been criticised for long delays, we have tried to make a world class aircraft. The world over, while technology development precedes product development, we attempted both at the same time in the case of LCA as we were denied technologies and had to find solutions the hard way,' Antony said.

The eighth edition of the three-day international seminar on 'Aero & Space Technologies - Success Through Global Cooperation' is being held in connection with the biennial AeroIndia 2011 trade exposition from Feb 9 in this aerospace hub.

Minister of State for Defence Production M.M. Pallam Raju, Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister V.K. Saraswat and state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation's Chief Controller for R&D Projects Prahlada also spoke on the occasion.

Simple Tips For Business

Simple Tips to Write Winning Business Proposals for the Solopreneur
If you're a service-based business owner - and particularly if your clients fall in the realm of traditional companies - the ability to write a strong business proposal is paramount to bringing in new business consistently and easily. Yet, if you're not careful, you can end up spending a lot of time putting together proposals that never go any farther than your outbox.
That's why my first bit of advice is to be selective in when you agree to write a proposal to begin with. In many ways, this is just something you learn over time. But most consultants find out rather quickly that some potential clients are happy to say, "Hey, why don't you put together a proposal for me?" when in fact they have no intention of ever hiring you - and are instead just curious to find out how much "something like that" would cost.
That's why I'll only write a detailed proposal after I've had a serious conversation with the client, and once they've expressed genuine interest in working with us even when we talk about a ballpark figure.
My second piece of advice is to put together a reusable framework for the two or three types of engagements you work on. I know. I know. "Every project is different." But is it really? My guess is that while the specifics change, what you do at the end of the day (consult? write? project manage? train? coach? account?) is relatively the same from one gig to the next. So save yourself a lot of time and heartache and create a template that you can use again and again.
Third, and most importantly, you want to make sure that the time you do invest in writing a proposal is going to pay off by bringing in a new client. With that in mind, here are some key elements you'll want to include in every new business proposal in order to increase your close rate.
Give it a compelling title. Don't just name your proposal "Acme Proposal." Grab your prospective client's attention from the start by using a title that immediately implies a benefit to them. For example, you could call it "Leadership Success Program for ACME Human Resources," or "ACME's 5-Phase Plan for Guaranteed Increased Sales."
Open with a testimonial. Begin to establish your credibility and hook your reader immediately by opening with a short, results-based testimonial. If possible, use a testimonial from a client who hired you to do similar type of work for them. But at the very least, make sure the client testimonial focuses on what you brought to the project and the end results they experienced. For example, did you reduce their costs? Help them earn more money? Save them time? Improve customer satisfaction? Lower their stress? You get the idea.
Provide an objective statement: Show your potential client you truly "heard" their needs by clearly and concisely outlining the primary goal or objective that they want to achieve. Don't try to be clever. Name this section something like "Primary Goal: To..." or "Key Objective: To..." Be sure to use as much of the client's own language, terminology and key words as possible so they know you're on the same page.
Build the business case. Why is this project important? What will happen if they don't follow through on it? Do some quick research on the Internet to see if you can find statistics or other proof points that build a business case reinforcing the importance of the effort. For example, if you're an executive coach, incorporate statistics from studies that show professionals who work with a coach earn more and are promoted faster. Or, if you're a sleep consultant, incorporate data that shows the health benefits of sleep.
Outline the key deliverables. Next, you need to tell your potential client specifically what they're going to receive as part of your services. But here's where a lot of proposals go wrong by becoming either muddled or overly detailed. You want to be clear and concise. Package the components of the proposal into bite-size nuggets so you don't overwhelm the client. Also, as a general rule of thumb, if you're proposal includes multiple options, limit it to only two or three at most. Part of your job as the outside expert is to recommend what you feel best meets the client's needs - not to give them a menu of limitless options for them to sort through.
Summarize the investment. Notice I said investment and not price. The client will receive value in exchange for the price they are paying. Therefore, it is an investment in their business or themselves - not a cost (i.e. loss) to their business. We typically like to offer clients two investment options - one for pay in full in advance (at a discount) and one for pay as you go (full price). There may be other incentives or bonuses that you can incorporate as well. People like to feel like they are getting a "deal." So if you are providing any type of discount or bonus for them, be sure to show how the math adds up in their favor.
Reinforce the return. Now that they've just seen the investment price, it's important to have a Return on Investment section directly below that summarizes the benefits once again. Remind your potential new client what the value is that they are receiving in exchange for that investment. I like to incorporate three types of returns - time, money and performance.
Close with credibility. You'll want to wrap up your proposal by reaffirming your credibility and why YOU are the best person/company to deliver these benefits to the client. Here's where you'll want to include things like your bio, your client list, awards you've received, your certifications, trainings and degrees, and any additional testimonials from clients. As much as possible, avoid long paragraphs of text and instead use bulleted lists. The client is more likely to actually read it.
And here's one last tip for good measure. Whenever you send a proposal to a client, be sure to set yourself up for success by:

* Saying thank you for the opportunity to present this proposal
* Acknowledging that it is a worthwhile/important/exciting project
* Telling them that you WANT to work with them on it (yes, explicitly TELL them you want the job!)
* Stating that you believe you are the best person/company to help them achieve their goal
* Offering to answer any questions they have

Together, these components will make for a very strong new business proposal that puts you head and shoulders ahead of your competition.
